(b. 2000, NYC) Kiki Joyce is a Brooklyn based painter who received her BFA in
Painting from Rhode Island School of Design in 2022. Joyce draws from personal
experience as a biracial woman of the Caribbean diaspora, depicting scenes and
subjects rooted in fading childhood memories, shared family stories, and personal
observations. Her work stylistically resembles that of popular media such as comics and cartoons in painterly renditions, in conversation with canonical nods to: Katherine Bradford, Kenny Rivero, Nicole Eisenman, Henni Alftan Devin Troy Strother. Rendering and framing her topics allow Joyce search for understanding and process contemporary society through a digestible, humorous and colorful lens. Engaging intuitive world building with subtle and not-so subtle narratives, bridging dialogues of complex topics. The artist as commodity, the woman in society, cycles of unaddressed or ignored violence, familial histories, and navigating relationships. Joyce imbues everyday objects with symbolic intention. In doing so, a shoe, watch, or a chess piece, become vessels for narrative. Drawn to the analogue, she references historical technology, the vanishing of the obsolete, relics maintain a timeless, simpler world for figures to inhabit questioning what remains in a digital future. Figures existing in speculative spaces of the assembled imagination, employing extracted iconography of national and personal identity, examining their stability and meaning. A high wire act harnessing tension, a delicate balance between playfulness and unease being central to Joyce’s practice, often re-contextualizing personal experiences through a lens of joy and adversity.
